Great Ormond Street Hospital

Phase 2A is a new Clinical Building located within Great Ormond Street Hospital. The building frontage in on Guilford Street on the north boundary and provides a new clinical facilities over eight floor and plant areas on two floors. There are two floors below and seven floors above ground.

The building is of reinforced concrete construction founded on a SECANT piled basement wall and raft slab. RC cores and post tensioned slabs form the upper floors of the building with steel frame on level 8 which forms the plant room structure. Facilities include: offices, theatres, wards, restaurant, kitchens, storage areas and associated plant rooms. Below ground are the oil storage, sprinkler and CWS tanks, kitchens, cold stores and staff change area. Above ground office, procedure and consultant rooms occupy level 1 with the restaurant occupying the entire level 2 footprint.

Level 3 is the theatre floor with three general theatres and one Angio Hybrid theatre. Level 4 is the Intensive care with levels 5 to 7 consisting of single, four and six bedded wards totalling 108 beds in total. The main plant located at level 8. The building envelop is a mixture of curtain walling, punched windows, stone rain screen and stone render with a feature glazing forming a flue on the north façade which provides natural ventilation to the restaurant area at level 2 roof louvers complete the envelop at level 8 and provides screening to the roof plant.

This heavily serviced building has two main core areas to the north and south with riser for ductwork, pipe work and electrical services. Plant has been sized to supply both the current and future phases and will form part of the hospital main infrastructure. There are 8 lifts within the main core areas, 2 bed lifts, passenger, fire and ecmo lifts. The building fit out includes glazed screens and sterile finishes to theatre facilities and ward areas. Public areas include waiting rooms, restaurant, parent and children’s areas which were all finished to the highest of standard.
